미 법원, 24년전 '사우디 미군관사 테러' 이란에 "1조원 배상"

(테헤란=연합뉴스) 강훈상 특파원 = 미국 연방법원이 1996년 6월 사우디아라비아 코바르에서 벌어진 미군 관사 테러와 관련, 이란 정부의 책임을 물어 1조원대의 손해배상 판결을 내렸다고 주요 외신들이 10일(현지시간) 보도했다.

보도에 따르면 미 법원은 이 테러를 이란 정부가 지시했고 이를 실행한 사우디 내 무장조직 '헤즈볼라 알헤자즈'(사우디 헤즈볼라)에 필요한 물품과 폭발물을 지원했다고 판시했다.

미 법원은 소송을 제기한 부상자 14명과 유족 21명에게 이란 정부가 지급해야 할 손해배상 금액을 8억7천900만 달러(약 1조554억원)라고 판결했다.

미국 현행법에 따르면 미국인이 사상한 국내외 테러에 외국 정부가 연루됐다고 미 법원이 인정하면, 해당 정부의 미국 내 자산을 동결해 이를 손해배상금으로 쓸 수 있다.

1996년 6월 25일 오후 사우디 주둔 미 공군이 관사로 쓰던 코바르의 8층짜리 건물 부근에서 폭발물을 실은 트럭이 터져 건물에 있던 미군 19명, 사우디인 1명이 사망하고 498명이 다쳤다.

모건 오테이거스 미 국무부 대변인은 9일 자신의 트위터에 "미 법원은 다시 한번 이란이 코바르 타워 테러의 책임을 인정했다. 이란이 지원한 테러의 희생자를 위한 정의가 진즉에 구현돼야 했다"라고 적었다.

앞서 미 연방법원은 2018년에도 코바르 테러의 다른 유족이 제기한 손해배상 소송에서 이란 정부가 1억470만 달러(약 1천300억원)를 지급해야 한다고 판결했다.
